    The Rocky Stream

This stream, filled with these huge boulders, is a thing of beauty to me.
Does it make this shot too busy?
    Looking for input.

    thanks,

    Scott

For me, there's too much rock and not enough stream.
I'd try a crop just above the big rock in the foreground perhaps?
Or if you re-shoot, more background and less foreground rock.

    Re: The Rocky Stream

I agree with Wombat. I love flowing water shots and I find myself looking for more water in this photo. Maybe with a dif. composition you could show both the water and the rocks, but with that said, I do like the low postition of this composition, but the photo as a whole seems to be missing something, and for me, it's the water... Just my 2 cents.

It is a nice shot...it could use a little cropping though.
Maybe crop some of the rocks on the edges out.

By cropping most of the foreground rocks you will shift attention to the water area.

I hate to be the "ney sayer" here, but this shot does nothing for me. It doesn't seem to have any central point of focus. It is too busy and could use a different composition. Also, did you use a long lens, because I don't see much depth here.

Perhaps if possible, switch to a smaller lens and climb out onto that big rock. Then drop on your stomach to keep the low angle and use a longer shutter speed to get more flow in the water.

I'm sorry, man. This just isn't working. Those boulders are a great subject but I think you need to single a smaller area out and maybe try the soft-water effect(long shutter speed to blur it). Maybe get up on that big boulder in the foreground and zoom in and out on different rock/water compositions - tighter - 'til you find a nice spot. Just ideas.
It looks like a brilliant spot with tons of potential.
Here's a crop of how I think you could improve this one. Now if you were to blur the background more so the two foreground boulders become the main subject it would create a focal point.
AA20D hit it on the head, "no central focus". That's the main problem.
    Hope this doesn't sound harsh.

    Re: The Rocky Stream

Hey! Thanks for all the input. This was something I was working on when I did the "Smoky Mtn. Stream & Ice Covered Trees" post a few weeks ago. I wanted to try something with the dead log in the bg and the big rock in the foregound. Maybe if I had some colorful leaves on the rock and (or) on the log.
    thanks again.

    Hi Scott,

I think this has lots of potential. BUT, there needs to be more flowing water and the lighting is a little flat. At the moment, Im not sure what is the focal point since my eye hunts around in the frame.
