    Abandoned 3

A rework from an earlier version. Let me know what you think. Too much?

I like it a lot. ...wonder if a slightly deeper field would not be a bit better. Love the shaft of light on the car. Very mysterious.

Were you using a tilt shift lens to get this very shallow depth of field?

daq, yeah, I thought of that too. The separation of the BG wasn't as good, but you got a good point.

Bob, well, I don't want it to look too fake. no one does. Thanks for the feedback.

    Gerald, thank you.

Levi, no, no tilt shift lens here. Effect was done in PP. Thanks.

Fernando. That light bothers some people and doesn't others. I do agree it is strong though. Thanks

Lee, I came back to look at it and noticed something. Right after the first sharp window on the left, the blur starts immediately and not gradually. Also the opposite row of buildings should start sharper and fades gradually.

The shallow DOF makes it look more like a model car than the real thing. I am 50-50 on it. I always enjoy all of the small details in the buildings, widows, wires, doors and lights.

For some reason I do find it visually appealing, however I think there is a wee bit too softening on the right side of the BW background ...I don't think it would take away from the image much to make it a little less.

    Re: Abandoned 3

Certainly different than your usual "jump out of the screen " amount of detail

the blur on the right side looks even , and not progresive, to me a sign it was added in PP

is there a trace of selective color on the car ? or maybe it is just my mind that want to see it

    Re: Abandoned 3

How did I miss this one??

I love it - particularly the subtle tonal variations and how the (faux) dof creates the coveted "miniature" effect. I also like that you chose a super wide focal length. And the detail in the car is astonishing.

Real nitpicks: I'm looking at the blur on the doorway to the left and it looks too artificial to me. And I'm on the fence about what Armando pointed out. Can't decide if the background blur looks quite authentic enough or not. Great job masking out the car, but yeah, not sure it looks progressive enough to pass for real blur. PS-generated blur is one of the trickiest things to make look convincing. Have you tried Alien Skin Bokeh?

    Re: Abandoned 3

    Thanks Seth.

Yeah, I did this in a hurry. Was just doodling around. Having said that, I need to figure out what part of the image would be blurred if such a lens existed that can give this scene some bokeh... I tried sharpening a plane that is of equal distance to the camera, from left to right. That's why I had the wall on the left, car and street on the right sharp. they were all on the same plane. I'm trying to figure out if there's a better way of doing it. Which parts would you keep sharp and which blurred to get this effect better?

no, i haven't tried alien skin bokeh, but i heard Photoshop CS6 has a 'bokeh' blur option under image -> blur :-) Can't wait until I install that!

    Re: Abandoned 3

Wow Liban ......... this one's very different !!! It does look like a toy car. Not sure if that may have been in the back of your mind when you shot it, or perhaps you were just using a very wide aperture as an experiment to see what happened. I think it's a success, but what about the color version? Or try a sepia tone effect.

The blue in the car is a very nice touch. I know this is pp work but it does look to be taken with a TS lens.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

    Re: Abandoned 3

Thanks GB, the blur effect wasn't due to any lenses but was done in PP. :-) I was just wondering if I added way too much blur to the BG. But glad to know that to some who view this , the extra BG blur won't be an issue. Thanks for the suggestion on the colours.

Pete, lol, definitely pp! tilt shift!? I wouldn't even know where to begin.

    Thanks

For some reason, it makes me think of a picture from Frank Miller's Sin City. Looks a bit like a comic. Really cool.
