The third shot is fantastic. I prefer the composition of the second one but the lighting and colors in the third.

I'm no macro expert but I rather like the first.

I like the first and third. Caleb is right about the comp of the second shot, but there is something weird going on with the skin of that one.

    Thanks for the replies.

jetrim - what is weird with the pepper's skin in #2? It is kind of mis-shapen, but that's natural.

I think it's just really soft light/different lighting

I used more diffusion material with #2, and the light was also slightly farther away.

I think maybe the condensation of the second one might be throwing it off when compairing it to the others. I like the apple the best. The lighting and colors are great.

    Re: Apple & Pepper

I think the peppers were past their prime as far as condition. The end of the stems are withered and the wrinkled skin in the second photo is from age. I think the Apple is great. My experience with macro is that you must be very diligent in your selection of subjects, as they are often displayed in a much magnified state.

    Nice lighting on all.

Thanks for the constructive critiques, natgaines and Phil.

Phil: As a matter of fact, I am just getting into this type of photography (indoor macros), mostly shooting birds/nature macros. Also, thanks for the suggestion and comment about the withered stem - I probably would have had never realized it!

    Re: Apple & Pepper

The first shot is the best. Excellent composition, and the lighting is effective in bringing out the depth and contours of the apple.
The second and third shots I do not like. The compositions are not good. Somewhere in between being too tightly cropped and not tight enough. Also, the sharpness on the third is not good enough. It should be very sharp where the water droplets are.
The first is a winner. . .well done.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, gahspidy.

I see what you mean about the droplets (actually glycerin, since water drips too fast) not being tack-sharp. Probably the cause is the close-up filter, and also a little flawed focusing. (My camera is rather lousy at MF).

Anyway, these are my first shots of their kind, and I will definitely be keeping in mind to focus with more extreme care.

Nice, I'll have to give this a try too. Did something similar yesterday with a Walnut. Cheers S
