    Alligator/Editing Help

I was sorting/deleting photos from our recent trip to Baltimore today. I took about 5000 actuation in 3 days. I am a really amateur photographer and have never taken my gear off continuous shooting, I'll take 5-6 shots of the same thing hoping to get one good one, change settings, shoot again. I maybe have 50 shots that are good enough to post on FaceBook (look what we did) and 2-3 that I was like WOW!

This one quickly jumped out (no editing just converting to JPEG):

Did some contrast, darkened it, took the red out, sharpened.

Any better/worse? Feel free to play with them as you like. I have the RAW file but no idea how to upload it. Probably the first shot ever I didn't know how to or didn't think cropping was needed.

So long as you credit me as the original photographer, go to town with my work. You can't make it any worse.

I like the original and the edited version for different reasons. I kind of prefer the coloring of the alligator in the first one, but I prefer the color of the water and surrounding area in the second one. Sorry I am not help but I do love this shot, I can see why it stood out for you.

I think you did very well.
I'm assuming the alligator is more the color of the second in true life.

    Yes.

It looked great switching a lot of the color balances around and getting "artsy" so I tried to simplify it by going to what I remembered to be its closest real colors. The water and surroundings were more like shot 1.

The second for me, the green tint seems to give it a more sinister aspect

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

I have no issues with you editing my photos

    Defnitively a great photo!

    I like the edited version

another possibility is to keep the dark reflection , and leave the background a bit lighter, with a bit of the red tint

    Re: Alligator/Editing Help

bit of advice, take the camera off continuous and let the focus lock engage before you actually snap a photo and i bet you'll end up with alot more useable photos. you can still take several and then change settings and take more.... just let it lock in and it should help... also will make you slow down a bit and pay more attention to composition.

second version seems more true to color and gives it a better feel, imo.

I really dig the second one.

    Re: Alligator/Editing Help

I agree with the others except, I'd mask the eye to keep it's original color and brightness. It's so rare for me to see an inspiring gator shot simply because I see them so often roaming free around here, but this one really is very nice!

Very nice shot! Looks to me like this was a smaller gator but a nice one, Jeff
