    Backpacking in the Mountains

This picture was taken on one of my last backpacking trips in the Great Smoky Mtns.
My 12 year old son was still in the tent asleep.
It was misting rain when we crawled into our sleeping bags for the night.
We had a 6 mile hike back to the truck.
My son now has a 20"x30" poster of this framed in his bedroom.
Just an example of why you should always pack the camera.

    thanks,

I like it Scott. I like the way you framed the tent between the two foreground trees.
Have you shopped this one? I like the vignetting in the corners. Some lenses give this effect unintentionally at certain focal lengths. You can also add it in post-processing.
Wondering about the exposure too. Quite dark at the top yet the snow is very white outside the vignetted area.

    Scott,
    This is a very handsome.
(I don't use this term unless I really like the image a LOT)
Seeing as this is a critique forum I''ll suggest a little different framing. I think the tents should be just a little lower in the image.
You have made a winning image here.

Where did you have the poster printed?

    Re: Backpacking in the Mountains

    Thanks for the comments.
This, actually, is a scanned copy of my 4" x 6" print. I shot this with my Minolta Maxxum 7
I think what some of you are refering to as vignetting, is actually a bad scan on my part.
Looking back now I wish I had taken more time to shoot a whole roll. But, honestly, I was more concerned with, my son & I, making the 6 mile trek back out with 9" of snow covering the trail.

Also, Carbon Terry, I used CLARK COLOR LABS.

    thanks,

    Scott

Scott, this is definately a nice one. In fact, the trees are plain fantastic as far as I am concerned. The only issue that I see here is the vignetting in the bottom corners (I am pointing this out assuming that you added it on purpose and that it wasn't a lense flaw).
The vignetting complement well the upper part of the frame due to the trees but look odd (to me) in the pure white snow.

    regards

    Hi,
I like the colour of this shot. The monochromic is well combined with the blue tent. They are in good harmony. I find the thin brushes in the foreground a bit distracting and they look like scratches. All in all, nice work!

I just love the colour and also the lack of it in this wonderful picture. I like the positioning of the tents and any lower and we might loose the two foreground trees coming out of the snow.
I do a lot of walking and I am envious of your environment as I am of this picture.
Tell your son I would also be very proud to have a poster of this over my bed.

    Overbeyond,
I didn't want it cropped differently, I wanted it framed differently.
I like the accidental darkened corners. It keeps your attention focused towards the center of interest.

    Re: Backpacking in the Mountains

i would say - GREAT shot, the only think i see in it that i would prefer not to is the tent being a little to central (for my personal tastes)

but its a really nice image, looks darn cold though

    Re: Backpacking in the Mountains

Thanks, "WORDS" it was a very cold hike out. Especially for one of my fellow hikers.
Just to the right of this shot is a creek. You have to rock hop to get back on the trail.
One of my friends fell flat, backside first in this creek. We had a big laugh about that all the way out.

    thanks,

    Scott
