abandoned industrial site

I shot these a few blocks from my work. It's an abandoned industrial area, don't know what it was used for originally but it's pretty run down now..

The 2nd one I think is a bit dark in the shadows, and the third one I'm regretting cutting off the top. But anyway, lemme know what you think...

I like your first picture. The dark edge (I don't know what it is) around the edge of the picture frames the scene in nicely. I also like the cross effect, lying on the ground as it is. There is a starkness to the picture I like.

I am not sure about the second picture. There is something about the picture that I can't put my finger on or define. I'm sorry I can't. :(

I like the third one, but I am drawn to old buildings like this. This one in particular looks as if it is prodding and poking about to see what is around it, with the different angles and edges and stuff around it. I like it very much.

Were these shot with your F828? What settings?

I like the first one alot - but I'd like to see a little more gradiation from black all the way to white with all the grays in the middle. But, I will say - this one really grabs your attention. Something about a burned out building that makes you want to look. Nice composition.

Number two doesn't do anything for me. I'm with bj - nothing specific to point out, but there's just nothing there that interests me.

Number three - love the composition. well done. Again - I feel like there's too heavy a contrast in the pic. Are these shot B&W or are you converting them in PS? If you're converting them in PS, are you using the channel mixer to create your conversions?

The first shot I dont feel is too good . Too much contrast, composition is not right. Hard to understand what I am looking at . I think either you should focus in tightly on something in the area, or stand back further, zoom out, so we can see the opening to this room or space.
The second shot I think is really good. Yes, a bit dark in the shadows but I like the stark contrast here between the lighted side of the building and the dark side. The composition is good, focus and quality of shot is good as well. Nicely done.
The third one is ok. It does'nt bother me about the top being cut off as it is not too severe and I can see that there is not much further up that i am missing out on. This image too is big on contrast and short on detail, but it works fine here.

Well, all the black framing in the first one is burned wood. In higher resolutions, you have more detail in the dark areas. I actually took two of this one with differnt exposures and this is the lighter of them. And yes, I took these with my 828. I love that camera. I took them in color and converted them to "grey scale" (which makes the pictures very flat and grey) in irfanview (shareware program) and bumped up the contrast to get some blacks and whites. I don't yet have ps. I don't remember the settings but I was autofocusing and going between aperature priority and manual exposure. If I were go hazard a guess, because of the bright sunlight, I think I'd have taken them at about f5 - f8, depending on the subject. I don't use a tripod (don't have one yet) so I try to keep my shutter speeds a bit on the high side. And, I'm still learnign what makes good B&W photos. I'm finding that as I explore photography, I find myself partial to B&W pictures. I'll post these (and others) in higher resolution to my member gallery soon.

You told me what it was I couldn't define when you described how you converted them and the ending results. Flat! That is what I couldn't put my finger on. I hope that makes sense!
