    Abandoned

Going through some old shots tonight I stumbled across this one. The first thought that popped in my mind when I first saw this scene was "Huh, abandoned siding, abandoned life" thus the title.

Nice shot Jetrim. I think it makes for a nice B&W.

Thanks Greg. The color shot isn't nearly as compelling in my opinion.

I feel the texture is overwhelming the potential subject. The rail and black material in the foreground is distracting. Perhaps a different angle and/or moving the shoe would've created a different perspective.

I'm with poker on this one. The composition seems disjointed and the elements don't seem to mesh for me. I like the b&w and high contrast as well as the premise for the shot. Perhaps a a tighter crop or a different angle as poker suggested. I think the image deserves further exploration to see where it can go.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

    Re: Abandoned

This was shot several months ago, so the shoe and the shirt may or may not still be there, I can certainly check (it's close). I had tried a number of different angles & subject distances on this the first time, and this seemed aesthetically the best by far to me. Perhaps removing the shirt and/or toning down the contrasty grass a bit. The idea behind including both rails was to illustrate that the tracks hadn't been used in a long time (otherwise, it's just a shoe in the grass).
I appreciate your comments and I will revisit this site and see what I can come up with.
    Thanks for the feedback.

Great material for B&W. You definitely need both rails in the shot! I would take a wee bit off at the top though, so that the top rail finishes in the corner.

Do you have a pair of old weathered boots? Otherwise, go get some at a 2nd hand shop, leave them out in the rain a few days, and you've got your own perfect prop's

    Re: Abandoned

Decent find, Jetrim, though I think it would be more effective if only the boots were sitting there. Or even more effective, not trying to be morbid, if some roadkill was there instead of the boot. The black and white works well for the rails !
