Wedding and event photography. . .question

If I were shooting an event or wedding for instance, am I expected to give the client all the digital files straight out of the camera? Do I have the freedom to remove the ones that do not come out ok and also tweak and slightly improve with simple edits the ones that I feel are worthy of having the client view?
I have heard of some photogs giving their clients all files right out of the camera and letting them do with them as they want. I was told that some photogs do this simply because they want to be done with the deal after the shoot and do not want to bother editing and sorting several hundred images.
What is the typical arrangement and what "quality control" do I have over the deal after the shoot is done?

My experience with this sort of thing is pretty limited, but I only show the client what I want them to see. I don't see any need to show them the OOF, under/over exposed images, or anything else that I wouldn't want to put my name on.

In the past, I have always ordered the prints for the client so I could see what they were getting before I gave it to them. I'm not doing that with my next (and last) wedding. I'm still going to edit and PP all the photos, but I'm giving a disc of JPEG's to the client along with a recommendation as to where to get good quality prints made.

On the other hand, it could depend on your terms of employment. For instance, are you working for someone who retains all the rights for those photos? If that's the case, I would give them everything, and let them to all the editing and PP work.

Thanks for your response, Mike. I agree, I would only like to show them what I would have my name on. I think part of what I am getting paid for is the after work. Just shooting is only the beginning, but sorting out, editing, and organizing in a way in which the client can easily look through and see what they like is the other part of the job.

I will be doing a wedding in the end of May as a second photographer. In this case, I guess I would pretty much have to go along with the way the booked photog does things, which could very well mean just handing over all the files.

I just recently did a wedding anniversary for some friends of ours as a favor. I only covered the reception and shot about 225 images. I later weeded out the bad ones and was left with 154 fine photos that I tweaked and cropped. I presented it to them on a DVD containing a slide show as well as a folder with all the high res jpegs for them to do as they like. I am also looking into signng up with PrintRoom.com and creating galleries there for the clients to purchase their prints with. I think it would make it easier for them to just sit back and order at the comfort of their home, and also I would make additional money on the prints and whatever else it is they order through the gallery.

You don't need to give them everything, regardless of what the other photog does. Unless it's already been agreed upon.

Sort, edit, then deliver. If this is a market you are wanting to get into, you don't want that crappy shot out there with your name on it.

Thanks Adina, thats how I'm thinkin. As far as this wedding coming up where I am going to be the second photog I am on a good and comfortable relationship with her and Im sure she will have no problem with me editing and giving here what I think is worthy.
I am not sure why a photog would want to give evrything to a client straight out of the camera but I have heard of this and seen some advertise to that affect.
If a client hires me to do an event for them they would have either contacted me because they saw samples of my work or word of mouth. If they saw my work, it would have been work that had been shot and edited by me so they are not just interested in my photography but my post processing as well whether they realize that or not.

I personally have only done about twelve weddings and only two events but I have never just given them the unedited photos unless they ask for it after they purchase regular prints. I just like to edit all of my pics, it's the best part of the job. The satisfaction in seeing my photos in all their glory. Sorry I'm a photo freak lol

I tell the couples/family/whoever I am shooting for that depending on our shooting agreement (In other words, if they are getting digital images), they will be edited. They won't see the OOF, bad exposure, or embarrassing (ok, they might see some!) ones.

You will be known by the worst images shown. I only want my name on the best images that I come up with.

I thought that was the point of hiring a photographer to do your wedding or event - to make sure he/she gets the right photographs and to polish them up, package them, frame them, cut them, print them, etc.etc.etc.... If it were just one person firing away at 8 fps they might as well pick a spot on the floor and hold down the button the entire show with a 32 gb memory card.

I bet if I found a photog that didn't do that I'd be as annoyed with him as I would if his (or her) main body were a rebel XTI

It's an amazing job, very good. I, too, when it began with the make photo on wedding. Now this is a hobby that has grown into a business. Now I have 10 people working for us and it's an opportunity for us to do amazing work.
