    Backpacking with K10D

I have heard that the K10D is superior to most in the outdoors. I will be backpacking for two weeks next summer and am going to get my first DSLR for this purpose and also many trips afterwards. Now im wondering if the K10D will live up to what is said about it and if it will survive in the elements. your comments are appreciated.

    Re: Backpacking with K10D

The K10D is fully water and sand sealed, which is normally a "pro" feature. I have just returned from 5 days in Poland where it drizzled incessantly - the camera got pretty wet on the outside, but a wipe with a tissue and it was fine. Bear in mind though that not all the older lenses are sealed in the same manner (although I believe some of the newer ones are).

Bottom line is that, apart from being a great camera, the K10D is the one I would choose (at that price point at least) if the weather was a bit dodgy.

    Re: Backpacking with K10D

The Pentax K10D is great in the elements. When we had one for our K10D pro review, I took it out on a long, rainy mountain bike ride in the redwoods. I had it out in the rain constantly and it performed wonderfully.

I don't intend to steer you away from the K10D. But for reference, the new Canon EOS 40D and the recently announced Olympus E-3 digital SLRs also have good weather sealing. So you're not limited to Pentax if you want that kind of performance. It would be worth your while to do some comparison. Here's a link to the digital SLR review section on this site:
