off camera control

Has anyone used the Olympus Master software to control the camera from the Computer? I have an on site shoot coming up where this will be necessary so I can shoot and print on site.

I am shooting Santa with Peoples Pets for a local pet food store and I figure this will be the fastest way to shoot process and print while the subject waits for their print.

If anyone can offer suggestions on how to do this I am open for any and all suggestions. I will spend the day today playing with it to see if I can figure it out as well.

Olympus Master was replaced by Olympus Digital Camera Updater and Olympus Viewer.

Are you wanting to shoot tethered for a particular reason? Or would a couple of flash cards swapped in and out be better?

Do you have someone to run the computer/printer for you? If so just have them shuffle the memory cards. It works and unless you lots of time to play and figure out the tethered workflow it might be quicker and more foolproof.

Try not to alter your print workflow too much in the field. It can bite you as it may start eating up time if there's something that comes up unexpectedly.


Now if you can print directly from the Oly Master suite in the way that works best great. Else I'd stick with something proven.

The one thing about shooting tethered, unless you are set up for wireless, is to keep the camera on a tripod. I learned to be very careful when I had a cable get snagged by someone walking where they shouldn't and dragged a whole bunch of stuff off on the floor. No major damage fortunately , except I nearly had heart failure!

Pets often need to be worked around and the less cables and wires the better. Also I like to be able to move around as the dogs and kitties may be at ground level, in someone's arms or on a chair table or other prop.

Check your manual there is a way to print directly from your camera, page 103 if your shooting with the E3. Otherwise Studio 2 is the only other way and it is being dicontinued.

I called Olympus and got a link for Studio 2.3 and a serial key. So far I have learned a few things.. most importantly that there is no live view when tethered. This makes it very difficult to shoot from the computer and get the shot I am looking for. I think swapping out memory cards may be the best option. I have no idea how busy the event is going to be so I am aiming to be as adaptable in the field as I can be. Just trying to keep all options open ATM. I will experiment with Studio 2 more this weekend and see if I can get the live view working and get back to you all =)

The alternative I'd try is the Eye-Fi card, a SD card that has built-in WiFi that you could ink to to your PC.
The ProX2 will make a direct (ad hoc) connect to your computer.
The Connect X2 doesn't mention PC connection and says it sues your WiFi network, implies it needs a router.
The ProX2 will upload RAW files, the ConnectX2 JPG

So if you're just working with your PC and a printer, the ProX2 is the only Eye-Fi card that will do it according to the specs.

Exx cameras don't support SD's unless he shoots with the E5. Only Xd and CF. Can you get one for that?

Ah, forgot they still had the proprietary XD on those.
No, Eye-Fi is on SD card only.
