I had been looking at cameras for a few months and seeing what I thought I could afford and what I could live without. I was able to pick up a E-510 with the 40-150 lens for $500 which seemed like a good deal.
I don't really know what 4/3 means to me or my photography though if you have any answers.

Glad to have you, Bigcity. The E-510 is one of the best DSLR deals right now. It's also one of my favorite cameras for backpacking. I love the compact size and the reach of the lenses. Welcome to the site and congratulations on your new camera. I believe it will serve you well. And if you grow out of it, there's always the E-3 :-)

Looking forward to seeing photos from your new rig!
