E-M5 It's Here...

Well it's here and the battery is charging. I did fire it up for a few seconds. The first reaction I have heard from most is how small it is. Well it is. If the mirrorless cameras get any smaller than this then they will be to small. This is as small as I can manage.
The focus speed is REAL fast. Inside lighting. The tilt screen is about the same as the NEX. A very nice feature. The dials index beautifly. Not easily knocked off settings. The EVF looks pretty much the same as the NEX 7. If you didn't know any better you would think you were looking through an OVF.
I like the controls on the back. I have never liked a rear dial. I don't know what they were thinking with that one. That idea was a flop. The buttons on the back are just made how I like them.
One con. I don't like the finder in the center of the camera. When I bring the camera up to my eye my nose rests on the LCD.
I haven't navigated the menu but if it is like previous Olympus cameras I am sure I will be happy. Olympus has always done a good job with that.
I'll get a shake down on image quailty this weekend. I am swamped at work right now. It's the mean season in my line of work.
My first impressions though are very positive. It is almost all I ask from Olympus from day one when the came out with the mirrorless line up. I have the 9-18mm and a Cokin grad and just need to find the time and subject.
I have to thanks Olympus for listening to their customers and delivering the goods. I know sometimes I might be the biggest whiner but it is also the best way to get their attention to my needs.
This is one cool camera. If the image quality stands, and I have no doubt it will, this one is a keeper. Thanks Olympus.
Now get to work on that E7, PLEASE.....

Thanks Ed. One other thing that I don't like is not having a way to use a shutter release. I mean come on. I don't think I have ever used the HDMI port on a camera. I had much rather have a port for a remote shutter release. The wireless remotes that Olympus and Sony sells just doesn't have enough range.

Hi Greg:

I don't have any knowledge of the HDMI port (schematics) / pin-outs,
but - I wonder if there's any adapters to convert a HDMI port to the
remote control port idea you are looking for..?

Maybe that might be some kind of a possibility..?

Scrolling down on that page's description it shows this though (?):

Not 100% fit OM-D E-M5

Maybe need to "double-check"?

One other thing to note Ed. The E-M5 makes a faint noise. It sound almost like a small computer fan. But after Google search I have found out this is the IS running.

Can this feature (if required) be "turned-off"?

I wonder what effect it has on battery drain?

Even with the IS off I hear it. So I think it can't be turned off.

Certainly, you will definitely do some "in-depth" analysis styles of

Just got mine yesterday. Even over 12 months after its announcement I still feel I made a very solid choice. 6 months ago I said 'arrivederci' to my Nikon D5100. I don't regret it one bit.
Will explore this gem using the 12-50 kit over the next few months. By mid summer I'm going 'prime time' with the 45 f1.8.
Will enjoying taking some family Easter photos with it.

I think you made a nice choice. I honestly think it's the best performing compact on the market. Be sure to write up a nice review and link us up when you get your feet wet enough.

Greg......how are you doing with your E-M5? I love mine. My biggest problem is that I have not had a lot of time for photography this past year. BUT! that is changing because I've put photography into my schedule! I'm still processing the learning curve which for me (somewhat technically challenged) is a challenge!

Liz it is certainly more complicated. As many Olympus cameras as I have owned I am going thru growing pains. There are many programmable buttons. Maybe to many. It's really not a great deal bigger the the E-M5. I have ran into a few quirks. The IS with the 75-300mm is so so. At 250mm and up the keeper ratio really drops. It must have a beefed up shutter in it as it seems louder and if I hold the camera lightly I can actually feel the shutter shift when it fires.
There are a couple of settings that is suppose to help but I don't think that it has. There is a thing called shutter shake and I am thinking that maybe the issue. You can google it. I'll post a nice review after I really get some time in with it.

Did you have the same problem with the E-M5? I think I read that both cameras are prone to shutter shock, especially with that lens (if I remember correctly). I know I read about it in a few reviews before purchasing the E-M5. The longest lens I have is the 40-150mm and haven't tried it on the E-M5.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the E-M1. I'm not looking to purchase it - loving the E-M5 too much and the E-M1 is way beyond me in many ways. Just curious as to how much difference there is.

Yes I had some shutter shock with the E-M5. The E-M1 seems to be a little worse. Mostly above 250mm. It's why I wonder if it has a different type shutter. But I will certainly put it through the paces and give a full review.
