    40-150mm question

I'm new to this forum... hi

and thats enough with introductions. So i have an oly 500 with a 14-45mm 3.5-5.6 and a 40-150 3.5-4.5 in the mail

i just purchased from B&H a used 510 with two lens kit for $520 [a real steal i think!] and it comes with the 14-42mm and the new 40-150 4-5.6

now from what i heard, the new 14-42 is better than the 14-45 i already have, so i will be giving that to a friend whos buying my 500, but im still not sure which 40-150 to sell off... on paper the clear winner is the 3.5-4.5, that seems really good for such a lens, so then why is oly shipping the new lens? and why is the new lens more expensive on B&H? is there something im missing?

I think I would stick with the older of the two. Just as you thought. The price difference probably reflects just that it is newer. I haven't tried it. It may focus slightly faster but I would lean more to the fastest at 3.5. Only a .5 difference but I would still go with that one. I use one on my 510 and am very happy with it.

The older (F3.5-5.6) 40-150 is a MUCH physically larger lens. All things being equal, I'd put them both in hand before deciding which to get rid of - it's very possible that the more compact size of the new kit lens is worth the speed sacrificed to you. Everything I have seen about quality ranks these two lenses equally.

thanks, i figured just as much, i just wanted someone with more exp to verify.
but im definitely making the right call getting rid of the 14-45 right? or is there something about that lens thats better than the 42, save for those 3mm

I never had an issue with either of those two. 14-45 or 14-42. Both took great pictures. I really saw no difference. I have since upgraded to the 14-54mm which I highly recommend. It's a great step up from the kit. Either way you go the those two would work.

    Re: 40-150mm question

i have heard good things about the 54, but i dont think i want another walk around just yet, im still a beginner after all. Only been shooting since February.

I think my next lens purchase will be something with more range than the 150, ive been looking at the 70-300. or should i get a sigma 55-200 since its less than half the price? i was shooting with my friends 70-300 IS on a canon and it was AMAZING. but now with the 510, every lens is IS

anyone know a good way to score cheap used lenses? ebay seems to have a good deal every now and then, but i want something more reliable...

I haven't found a good source other than e-bay. You might try KEH.

If you have had good experiances, or bad, with any camera dealers please post a review of them in Camera Dealer Feedback. It may help someone out in the future.

i wouldnt go for it, if you're ebay savvy, you can better deals. the 14-45 goes for about 80 used, and the same 40-150 I picked up for 122 shipped.
