Anyone use these? I'm just curious if it would be a good idea to have one for hiking, as a back up in case I underestimated the amount of water to bring.

Hi Cara...try posting this on the mtbr site...many of our mtbr'ers use that site and PJ I think runs it also...here is the link http://www.mtbr.com . I think you'll get much better answers there. Hope this helps.

I dd use one well-rated filtration bottle, unfortunately the product line was killed when the company was taken over.

Key point: go to an outdoor shop for filtration needs. Try places such as REI, Gart, EMS, etc. Basically, any place that caters to backpackers. Often, retail-style "filtration bottles" and other filtration devices are ineffective against the nasties (e.g., crypto) in the water that you definately do not want.

You might also consider a water filtration pump: there are several excellent small ones out there. Again, stick with the places that support backpackers to avoid the silly stuff.

If you don't do this very often, chemical processing can be very good (chlorine or iodine tablets). They give a taste to the water but, if the instructions are followed (and you dump in some Kool-Aid style flavoring!), work extremely well.

I've been looking at Katadyn bottles on campmor.com, the filter is effective for Giardia and Crypto. I'll look at the small pumps too..

Thanks for the input! We're day hikers, so I think it may be a matter of deciding of the cost/benefit is worth it. I have run out of water on hikes before, which is why I'm looking at these.
