    Question Self-Parking Cars

    Just around the corner .......

    Wow, technology is scary.

Audi Piloted Driving at CES 2013 - YouTube

How would it know if a spot was reserved or if there was a one way lane in the parking garage?

This sure beats the hell out of two blonds fighting for the same parking spot.

    Re: Self-Parking Cars

So is there a protocol for cars to negotiate for spaces?
Or would only AUDI talk to AUDI and therefore Ford couldn't get in on the act?
How does your car talk to the garage to find the handicapped spaces?
How does your car know how to get into the garage, and out of it again?
How does it work if there are ticket barriers - where is the robot arm to insert the ticket in the slot?
When this faces the real world (nothing is as persuasive as a rigged demo) it's going to fail big time.

So could it be stopped by a pedestrian stepping out in front of it? (I assume it has collision avoidance)
It's vulnerable while self-driving, if it's blocked in then someone can break into it ... with the engine running.
Can it then be disengaged from auto pilot and stolen?

I'm interested in the security protocols they've got on that smartphone app to prevent hacking.
Something that I'm sure will be immediately worked on by thieves, after all this is going to be on the high-end cars
If you can wake it up from park and persuade it to come for pickup, then are the doors unlocked and can it be driven manually?
    Oh the possibilities are endless.

At least the Google self-driving car has only crashed when a human took over

Yeah, it has to be told something about the facility it's in.

Can you imagine the front door at WalMart with 45 of these things trying to do pick-ups?

    Re: Self-Parking Cars

I imagine all that has been taken care of, Paul and wfooshee

Seriously, I asked the same questions - seems a lot harder problem than say auto-piloted jets. Maybe they have radar to detect is someone is walking in front of it. But what if a drunk falls asleep in front of it, or someone lays a bag down there, does it not move forever? Maybe it communicates with the garage attendant if there's a problem, and regarding the layout (real time).

But I can see the headaches worrying about whether this crazy thing will malfunction ... and, the liability for the companies that make it if it screws up and hits someone.
