    One thing moderators do

Just to give you an idea of one of the things moderators do, I started counting in the "Camera Dealer Feedback Forum" how many spams we receive and have deleted, many of which you never see. I went back on just the last 150 posts and out of 150, there were 145 spams that had been deleted and 5 legitimate posts that stayed in this forum alone. I just thought I would give you an idea of some of what goes on here. We get them as quick as we can but do have other things like jobs or picture taking that we do during the day also. I would like to thank my fellow moderators for the job they are doing and give them   , Jeff

I meant to put this in the site feedback forum, so move it over there if you like.

Good post, Jeff. I think we should move it to a different forum. It needs more attention and it's really not off topic. What do you think about ViewFinder or Site Feedback? I could see it as a sticky on Site Feedback. It should be titled, "Thank Your Moderators."

You don't have to tell me. Moderators are the unsung heroes of any forum.

I mod on a graphic design/ developer site that covers everything from Photoshop and Lightwave to Webhosting and Search Engine Optimization. A particular pain for us is the SEO forum, because several posts are actually legitimate links to SEO services, while others are spam.

Needless to say, all the Mods here have my respect. You too John.

Yes, we work our tails off and we get very little Respect

Seriously, the Post Processing forum doesn't get as much as some others, but it gets its share. Seems that the Off Topic forum is mostly spam. Hopefully the website update that's in the works will help control it.

Happy holidays to the Anti-Spam Team.

Greg, I went back and counted the last 300 posts in the Camera Dealer Feedback Forum and 278 were deleted spam posts and 22 were good posts. This is turning into a full time job, Jeff

    Re: One thing moderators do

Fortunately spammers are easy to spot.
Once you get your eye in, you won't even need to open the message to know it's a spammer.
    1st post in off-topic?
    Non-latin character set?
    Replying to old posts?
    Username looks weird?
Several identical replies to their own post? (inept)
New user posts identical messages in several forums?

I'm sure a rules-based system could be made to rank likely spam, just like email filters do.
Or a neural network trained to recognise spam by analysing our decisions.

    Re: One thing moderators do

I do it mostly on my iPhone when I take a coffee break (no access from the PC inside my customer site).

It's not like writing a serious post. Just choose the option Delete Post and then there are only 4 letters to type (S P A M)

Well, even if its only a couple clicks and four letters, I'm sure it's a major pita when it's got to be done all the time. I'm curious if us users reporting it and inquiring about it is helpful to the mods or if it just adds to the frustration.

Yes it helps. I will get an email straight to my HTC and I can zap it on the road. Please report it.

In every forum, Mods are the one solely responsible for the betterment of the forum. be it spams or scams, mods really work hard to keep those spammers down to the toe. hats off to you.

    Re: One thing moderators do

In wholehearted agreement in the vital work mods do on forums but, and this is probably a lame question, how does one become a mod (not that I'm at all interested in such a role (no time), just curious). Are they recruited or invited, do they apply for the role, and what are the attributes of the ideal moderator?

I believe they are usually asked to become a moderator, Jeff

Speaking of SPAM When are these guys going to learn that most forum software attaches < no follow > tags to the links automatically so it ain't doing their SEO a bit of good :mad2:

I feel your pain Mods, but look on the bright side, spam is way easier to deal with than trolls, Flame wars, and cyber bullies At least the folks in this community have real lives!
