Music for Relaxation recommendations

This is what I do. Start off topic threads :)

OK. I'm sitting here working on my machine and I am in the mood for some mellow, interesting, relaxing, New Age type music. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or comments. Currently I am listening to the K-Pax (under-rated movie. I highly recommend it) soundtrack by Edward Shearmur. Vangelis is cool. I also enjoy some of David Lanz's work. While it's usually a little faster paced, Moby has some tremendous music as well.

I'm not necessarily looking for classics. I have a ton of classical mp3's. Today I am looking for music with piano, synth, flute, strings. Any or all of it :)

Any ideas? Recommendations. I am ready to go to iTunes and blow some money. Maybe I will dabble in the illegal download of copyrighted music via Kiwi as well -- but only as a last resort.

First one that comes to mind is Elemental by Tears for Fears.

I don't know if this would be your flavor, but I've always found Jean Luc Ponty's 1979 "A Taste for Passion" very soothing to listen to. jazz-rock, electric violin stuff. Here's his site: http://www.ponty.com/

By the way, did you know that Tears for Fears is back together and will be releasing a new album on Sept. 14 called "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending". The website (http://www.tearsforfears.net) has a preview.

Interesting, hope the new album doesn't suck.

Elemental is probably in my top five of all time as well. Such a unique album, at least to my ears.

Try Jem or 4 Strings. Along the same lines as Moby I think.

Every night I go to sleep to Orbital. Try Halcyon, on and on. You won't be able to find anything more relaxing, or more beautiful.

and another one I haven't listened to in a LONG time, Suzanne Ciani, but I'll tell you this: her music was able to put me to sleep in the middle of LABOR. As in Childbirth. Now that's relaxing!

Here's an oddball for you that I love ... Mahavishnu Orchestra, with guitarist John McLaughlin(keyboard, violin, flute, and McLaughlin, possibly the most under-rated guitarist ever).

Wow. There are a lot of folks here with the same taste in music that I have :) Halcyon, On and On is on my mp3 play list. I keep wanting to use it for some sort of home video/dvd type thing. I guess the chance may present itself someday!

BTW, if you want something in the Vangelis, Andreas Vollenweider vein, check out Kitaro and Jean Michel Jarre (Jarre's Oxygene and Equinox are amazing). Also early Synergy and Tangerine Dream...

I also think I went about a year where at the end of just about EVERY stressful day I put on an Enya CD to unwind. I love all her music...

I suppose that's possible, but I've always heard his name included as one of the best. The problem was his music was really tough to label, and at some point he stopped getting much radio airplay, except on fusion shows, mostly on college stations.

I once saw Mahavishnu open for Return to Forever, and they all jammed during the encore. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure Billy Cobham was sitting in on drums for the Orchestra, too.

The stuff that came from that stage that night was beyond belief... :cool:

Yeah, underrated might not be the best word for him, but man, he was good. Billy Cobham was the drummer in at least one of his albums. I played a few concerts with a 'super group' called Dreams ... they didn't last very long, but had Cobham, the Brecker Brothers(remember BS&T) on horns, John Abercrombie on guitar, and a singer whose name I can't remember.

Throughout their history, TFF has been the duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith with an assortment of backing musicians. What I meant was Orzabal, IMO, has been 95% of the CREATIVE FORCE behind the group, much as George Michael was with Wham! (all due respect to Andrew Ridgeley)... :D

Ahhh. Now I understand. This is one of the reasons why I think Elemental is such an amazing CD. My understanding is that Orzabal pretty much ran with it and Smith fell tot he background.

I know that come September I will be purchasing the CD on iTunes. Evaluations soon to follow!
