Another reason why everyone should own a jeep.

A cab decided to run into my beloved jeep yesterday.



You can see his airbags deployed, all of his front fenders have crumpled, the bumper is gone, as well as the grill. Had to be towed away. Even the door panels were bent out of shape, it was a bit of a pull to get the driver's door open. Thankfully no one was injured. I'm a bit worried that his car is totaled, and how that will effect my insurance premiums.



I am especially mad because my front grill has a scratch that I will have to touch-up before it rusts. That, and I will have to get a new bumper from Ebay ($20). Airbags still soundly in their nests. It felt a bit like bumping the parking barricades at the supermarket.

But do you know what burns the most? That rectangle in the middle of his grill is MY LICENSE PLATE, which I will probably not be able to get back. Bummer.

It looks like the car did what it was was designed to do - crumple up in the event of an accident and protect the occupants. Your Jeep doesn't look like it was designed to crumple up and just went through it.

Your suggestion to have everyone drive Jeeps - what happens if two non-crumple-up Jeeps go head on? My guess is that the occupants do the crumpling up bit instead of the vehicle.

My long time friend is a Jeep fanatic. However, she is also realistic. She suggests that everyone should buy two jeeps: one for the road while the other is in the shop getting repaired... again... again... again... They have never been all that reliable. She loves them anyway, at least the "real jeeps": CJ-7, Wrangler, and that really old one I've forgotten the name of.

True enough, but this was a 10 mile an hour collision. crumpling unnecessary. Honestly, a bumper to bumper collision would not have done nearly as much damage but my bumper was on level with his grill and headlights.

Had his car actually had a bumper, instead of a plastic coated piece of trim that passes as one, this would be a much less costly problem. There really is no reason for trim to crumple, so long as the frame does properly.

I have two Jeeps, but not because they are always breaking down, in fact they have both been very reliable. Odd though, only the Ford parts break when stuff does break Remember Jeeps are made from parts from all the former Big Three US companies. Seriously, other than the thermostat every part I have replaced were Ford built parts!
Anyway my daily driver is a 91 Cherokee 4.0 4x4 and then I have the 87 Cherokee 4x4 for Off Road use only, it too has a 4.0.... and just in case I have a spare motor and trans and just for good measure I have a 97 Dodge Ram 2500HD 4x4 with 360 4x4 with 4:11 gears to do the pulling....:thumbsup:

Don't let my friend here the name "Cherokee." That's a pseudo-jeep chosen by the yuppie wuss crowd! She has very rigid thinking when it come to these things.

Real Jeeps are a thing of the past. Now we have 4 dr versions, long wheel base ones, options that were never meant to take offroad abuse and manual trannies, transfer cases and hubs are disappearing from them. I would NEVER buy a Jeep without a manual transfer case or manual transmission. Sad that the I6 4.0L is history also.


Yuppies ruined the whole truck/suv market for people that actually USE these vehicles for what they were meant for.

I've got a Jeep Patriot with 13,000 miles on it. Very reliable so far... A few odd design decisions by Jeep, but nothing's broken down. High SUV bumpers and cars don't mix -- sad. JS, you have a Ford too then? or are you saying your Jeep has Ford parts on it?? Sorry for the confusion. Rob, the Patriot's not a hard core off road vehicle but it does Ok. I had one of those true off roaders (a 91 Isuzu Amigo) and it was horrible on the road! The worst ride I think I've never known. True it never got stuck, but if you took washboards faster than ~ 7 mph you almost flew through the roof The Patriot can take the boards at 20 mph easy.
