Its OK, it's "For the Children"

Just like the lady in the Simpsons who cries out in anguish "Won't someone think about the children?' our wonderfully dumb Congress has brought up the topic of Universal Internet Filtering to be forced on all citizens (can you say "China", or "Iran", or "North Korea", etc.). Civil Liberties groups were specifically excluded from the discussions.

Why? Because "Internet is a dangerous place where parents alone will not be able to protect their children." Bureaucrats in the FCC make much better parents

As I stated in another thread, nanny laws are going berserk.

thats ridiculous. I wrote an essay last year on google's partnership with china and their censorship of many things, including the infamous tienanmen square massacre. When you did a search on google china for it, it came up with nothing relating to the massacre at all.

Re: Its OK, it's "For the Children"

Okay, I didn't read the link, but here's my thoughts on the whole "protect the children" thing.

Some parents need to get their heads out of their asses. Until they do, and take an active role in what thier child is doing, and take some accountabilty for the actions of thier child, laws like this are going to get passed. Why? Because these same people are the people who feel it's the teachers responsibilty to make sure thier kid behaves. Same concept applies. It's the governments responsiblity to make sure my kid isn't finding things they shouldn't on the internet. No it's not you moron. Take some time to talk to your kid, and pay attention when they are in the internet. Instead of giving them that computer to hide in thier room with, make it out in the open, so you can see what they are doing.

And I understand that after a certain point, you can't watch your child every minute of every day, but by that time, you should have taught them to make some decisions on their own.
    I sleep, but I don't rest.

Re: Its OK, it's "For the Children"

Paul: enough people voted for them, or were apathetic enough not to vote against them (what was the last election %age turnout?) that I guess it's no surprise politicians do what they want, not what you want.

Oh and I'm 110% behind you, Adina.
It's more than some parents, it seems like it's most of them
It's the same parents that abrogate all their responsibility to the TV for babysitting, education, conversation, and give them cellphones and internet to chat to anyone they want. Oh and they expect the schools to teach them to read and write, but without any reading and writing at home.
