Yeah its amazing where calories creep into our foods. It's not the meats that are killing us with calories its the sauces and oils. Of course, the saturated fat and cholesterol in meat doesn't help either, but being mindful of the add-ons can save a ton of tummyache down the line.

And, drink water instead of soda people! ;)

    Re: Eat this not that

I've seen a few similar articles. Have to admit I've been to Panera and had a Sierra Turkey before - tasty and now I know why! I'll bet that their soups are pretty high in calories/fat/sodium...

My new hobby/obsession takes a bit more time at the grocery store, this time looking at salad dressings. You'd think the ones in the refrigerated cases would naturally be better, right (refrigeration probably means less preservatives, and heck it costs more)? Wrong. It is pretty surprising where the junk is hidden. I think articles like this should be taken as just letting you know that everything is a choice, and not an obvious one. Eat junk once in awhile if you want, just realize what you're actually eating.

I'm strictly an oil and vinegar man. You can't improve on cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and vinegar. I even pay the extra few bucks now for organic.

I suppose it doesn't go with every type of salad, but it's definitley the best thing for you...

the best trick in the food store is never to venture into the inner isles (unless you need to) and just shop around the outside of the store. They keep everything which is mostly good for you around the sides: bread, meats, vegetables, dairy... They put all of the manufactured and processed foods on the inside, which contain more calories and preservatives than elsewhere in the store..

When my gf told me this, I didnt believe it, but I noticed it the next time I went, it's mostly true.

...I doubt it's a conspiracy by the grocery and food industry.

Simple truth is the perimeter cases in super markets have the heaviest refrigeration units and (at least in Florida) are almost always stocked from the back, meaning they need to be adjacent to the back rooms.

And hey, don't you know that meat and dairy products aren't good for you, either?!? :cryin:

Besides, they keep the toilet paper, coffee, and pasta on the inner aisles!

Well they do sell low fat meat and dairy. Not all of it is bad for you.

Anyway, I find it a useful trick. Learned it on discovery health channel.. Cool shows on that channel. :-D

Not true. Whole grain is very good for you. The problem is finding it. And if you're used to white bread, the crunchy stuff takes some getting used to.

    Re: Eat this not that

Ah just got back from Germany, the hotel had home made bread at breakfast.
Whole grain and I think included nuts, maybe pistachio, as well.
Lovely and tasty with an excellent crunchy crust.

It's just not the same coming back home to what bakers call bread

Eh, that's extremely debatable. A lot of nutritionists are pointing fingers at grains - ANYTHING wheat or corn, e.g, as the cause of high rates of allergies and chronic health problems in our population. Even linked to seemingly unrelated things like joint pain and chronic back pain. It's still a bit fringy, but especially in holistic medical practices it is becoming more mainstream. Too bad bread and butter is so damned good.

    Re: Eat this not that

Obviously we all have opinions of what is and is not good. People have been eating bread and grains for hundreds (thousands?) of years and I question the recent (last couple of decades) opinions saying that it's unhealthy. Of course breads whose ingredient lists read like a chemical factory (Wonder Bread, etc) aren't the same thing here. And too much of anything isn't good for you. Only way to know for sure is to make it yourself which I have actually been doing for years - when I have the time. There's just no comparison between something with less than a half-dozen ingredients that just came out of the oven and even "good" commercial breads.

Speaking of chemical factory, I pass on the low fat stuff - check the ingredients for regular versus low fat versions. Not pretty, no thanks. I'll just eat less of the "real" stuff.

I've heard the "center of the grocery store" theory quite a few times. It's really a generalization and it depends how a store is laid out, but its bottom line is to avoid so much processed stuff. Plenty of healthy things in the middle; plenty of unhealthy things at the perimeter. Coffee is bad? I think it would be more hazardous to the people around me if I stopped drinking it!
