Re: Walk around Nikon Lens
A Nikon Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX would be your best bet.
Re: Walk around Nikon Lens
You have a D5000? If that's with the 18-105 VR then that's already a pretty good walkaround lens. If you have the 18-55 on the other hand:
- the 18-105 VR already mentioned (I want one for holidays)
- the 18-200 VR is very versatile (use it a lot)
- the 16-85 VR (more pro)
- the 35mm f1.8 (for use at night)
Re: Walk around Nikon Lens
Yup, 18-55. It's meh. Thanks guys!
Re: Walk around Nikon Lens
I have a (broken :( 18-200, definitely versatile, albeit heavy. Didn't stop me from walking around disneyland with it though.
Re: Walk around Nikon Lens
Ditto on the 18-200mm VR. It's bigger than your 18-55mm kit lens. But in my book it's still not a big lens. I wouldn't use it for serious architectural photography but for almost everything else it's pretty damn good - especially if you only want to carry one lens. I've got the Canon version and in spite of having "better" glass, it's my most-used lens and it's more than paid for itself with published work. The 18-200mm is always my first recommendation for someone who wants to replace their kit lens.
Re: Walk around Nikon Lens
If I was only allowed one Lens I would go for a Nikon 18-200 VR 2, but having quite a few other lens I never got round to buying that 18-200, I have gone into the camera store to buy one and then end up buying a different lens, maybe I only seem to buy lens with the fact that I earn quite a bit from photography, I sent less than 5% on camera equipment that I have earned from photography, if I did not earn anything from photography I would just have a Nikon D7000 with a 18-200 and a Canon S90, that would do me fine.
Re: Walk around Nikon Lens
Agree with Eleanor...the 16-85 has become my favorite walkaround lens.
Under the Wildlife and Nature section I have a post of my recent bear shots. The cub photo was taken with this lens. Mama bear made me slightly nervous and used my 70-300 for her... but was still shaking a bit :)
