noise and exposure on a d70

I hear people talking a lot about with high noise they can change the exposure to make it less noticeable. How do you go about doing this?

Lower iso and slower shutter speed. Problem is though the Nikons are inherently noisier than Canon's due to sensor and processor technology.

If you try to lighten an underexposed high ISO shot, it'll be really bad. Like a TV with really bad reception from the rabbit ears... You could lower the ISO, like JS said, which will give you a slower shutter speed to work with or a wider aperture (if that's an option) to make the exposure correct.

Try Noise Ninja too. The D70 seems pretty good in the high ISO noise department to me, and this software should help.

There are a few studies I've read that show this. If your only consideration is noise at high ISO (and you only want to spend ~$1k), choose Canon....

Exposure compensation- +0.3-0.7EV during the exposure will bring up your shadows, and the better exposed an image is overall the better the noise characteristics are.

Difficult to compare Nikon and Canon directly. They don't release products at the same rate.

If you compare the 4-year-old CCD 6Mpix sensor with its 18 month old image processor of the D50/D70 with the 18 month-old CMOS 8 MPix sensor + 12 month old image processor in the 350D then golly Canon is slightly ahead of Nikon. Or if you compare the APS-sized sensor of the D200 with the 24x36 CMOS in the 5D.

I don't think that you can make blanket statements. There are too many variables and the technology is improving all the time. I've read that theoretically CMOS is inferior to CCD but if that's so then Canon have done a great job in getting it to the same level.
