Re: Nikon D7200 announced
Charles let us know if the upgrade to the d7200 is worth it and why.

Yes looking forward to the hands on comparison. I'm still a bit breathless over how big an upgrade the D7100 is over my old D90.
Re: Nikon D7200 announced
Got the D7200. It's going to take a while to really compare with the D7100. Lightroom doesn't know how to handle it yet (I shoot exclusively RAW) and Nikon NX-D is so different in its treatment of noise that I can't do a proper comparison.
I work a lot in low light (apartment interior, no flash 1/125s f8). 6400ISO is pretty common for me and the D7100 did it just fine. But the first thing that I noticed on the D7200 is that the standard auto-ISO setting goes all the way up to 25000ISO. Nikon must think it's usable..
I calibrated the focussing on all the lenses I'm likely to use on it. I encourage you to do this on any wide-aperture lens on any camera. Some of mine needed a really large correction.
I should have a good experience of the D7200 by mid May. Lots of missions for it in the next few weeks

Re: Nikon D7200 announced
The D7200 is pretty much the same as D7100
Re: Nikon D7200 announced
Something besides it's very helpful would be helpful.

These idiots are just trying to get up to 10 replies so that they can start writing their own posts which are usually SPAM which I then delete. This guy doesn't actually have a spammy signature so I haven't deleted his posts.
Plus Chasseurs d'Images review is out and they say - you might as well stick with the D7100, the changes aren't enough to make it worthwhile changing from the D7100.
I've now had a week out in the field with the D7200 doing architecture (in Budapest - it was lovely). I'm still using the Nikon software instead of Lightroom to develop my RAW files, which puts me off a bit (it's actually pretty good - if Lightroom go all-monthly-payments I'm leaving)
- The images on the 18-140 and 10-24 are remarkably sharp. I can't really tell 100 ISO and 400 ISO apart (might be the software).
- It seems to me that the exposure accuracy is better than the D7100 and the D800. I seem to be making tiny adjustments and bringing in different levels of Active D-Lighting. I haven't yet had an image which looked unnatural when bringing back detail from the shadows.
- The overall impression is of magnificent images - which are still not quite as magnificent as those from the D800.
In one week I have a model shoot in Ibiza. That should give me a better idea, having done lots on the D7100
Re: Nikon D7200 announced
Thanks Charles and keep deleting them please. By the way, glad to see that a little cleanup was done here. Hopefully we will get this site going again without these idiots that degrade this site.
On another note, last year I was ready to switch to FX, but changed my mind again at the last moment after I had sold off all my DX lenses, so ended up buying my favorite 16-85 lens again. Unfortunately I did not test it right away and upon our return from a recent trip I discovered that all photos were badly out of focus. Lens and camera are now at a Nikon service center and hopefully it will be fixed upon return.
Re: Nikon D7200 announced
Did you try to calibrate your 16-85 on the body before sending it off to Nikon? I've done it on all my lenses. I quickly discovered that my 24-120 was way out on the D800 but I just did a careful calibration and now its spot on.
I sold two great lenses with the D300 - the 35mm f1.8 DX and the 40mm f2.8 macro DX. The 40mm was one of the best lenses I ever owned. I looked longingly at the 35mm DX in the shop yesterday but as the salesman said - the new 35mm f1.8 FX is twice as big and expensive but it's not that big/expensive and I could use it on the D800 as well.
My comparison of the 18-140 vs my FX lenses is an endorsement of the quality of the 18-140. It doesn't mean my FX lenses are unusable on the D7200, the différences are actually minimal. My primary platform is still FX but but the cost of the body stops me renewing it as often as my DX one.

No, I did not Charles, don't know how. The Camera shop that I deal with recommended that they send it to the Nikon service center, so we did. We'll see how it goes, and will post results.
Re: Nikon D7200 announced
If you've only got the 16-85 lens then leave it the way Nikon have set it up.
If you have other lenses then you can fine-tune the autofocus yourself quite easily. It's explained in this video (from 4 minutes onwards).

Re: Nikon D7200 announced
Thanks for that link Charles. When I get my next lens, and it's not focusing correctly I will give it a try :-)
Re: Nikon D7200 announced
Just got my camera and lens back from Nikon. They checked and cleaned the camera but did not check the lens by the looks of it. Brought it back to my camera store again and they confirmed that my lens is very soft compared to other lenses. Now my lens is going back to Nikon. First bad lens, so shouldn't complain too much eh :-)
Re: Nikon D7200 announced
Well, this is my first negative experience with Nikon Canada. My dealer has played around with my d7100 and 16-85 lens and agrees images are very soft. Other lenses were much sharper and my lens is somewhat better on other cameras. Sent the lens back to Nikon and was told that the lens is within specks. I'm so fed up now because I realize that both my camera and lens are not the best they can be and have put them up for sale. Once sold, I'll think about the d7200 and another 16-85.
Re: Nikon D7200 announced
Go for the D7200 with the 18-140 in a kit. Best value out there.
DPReview just published a review of the D7200. They like it a lot. (I don't like people who post on DPReview's forums but their product reviews are good)
Re: Nikon D7200 announced
Might just do that Charles, if I manage to sell my stuff.

Seems a big updating this time

Charles, managed to sell the d7100 and the 16-85. For whatever reason those two items did not play well together.
Just bought the d7200 and a cheap used 16-85 to tie me over until the new 16-80mm,2.8-4 lens becomes available in North America. I would have missed the wider end if I had gone with 18-140.
