Nikon D60 hood

Hey guys

A couple of weeks ago a bought a Nikon D60 SLR with the 18-55 VR optics package, recently i have been reading tips about the camera and most people say to buy a "hood" for your camera to prevent lens flair.

my question to all of you photographers is it necessary to have a "hood" for your camera?
if so would a regular plastic one be good or would you recommend buying the rubber collapsible one (i believe its called that).

I see nikon doesn't include a hood for this lens which I'm a bit surprised by as they usually include the hood.
I also see that the hood isn't a flower hood but that they can be had for 17 to 22 dollars.
They do help with flare when shooting towards light to a degree and also help protect your glass.
Note that you order the hood for your lens and not the camera.
