    Nikon D40 Newbi needs help

I have a Nikon D40 I purchased used, everything seems to work fine except I don't see the Exposure Scale in the Viewfinder nor the LCD display. In the Viewfinder the Exposure Scale as shown in the Manuel is black. Am I missing something? Is this feature turned off on the camera?
Thanking you in advance for any assistance.

You mean the Electronic analog exposure display? (it says here in my D60 manual). There are several viewfinder display options on the D60 (Classic, graphic, wallpaper). It may be the same thing on the D40. Try setting it back to Classic

Isn't the graphic option the one that shows the picture of aperture and shutter speed on the lcd. I'm not sure about your issue in the view finder, but it may have to do with what settings you're using. Try dialing it to M and see if it's still blacked out.
