Lens recommendations?

I'm interested in learning/experimenting with studio work, mostly portraiture. The budget is tight and I don't mind looking at used lenses. Trying to stay under $200 or so. This will be for use with a D50. Any recommendations for lenses to check out? Thanks in advance for any advice

I highly recommend a 50mm f/1.8. I have the Canon version but I'm sure the Nikon version is much the same. And it's within your budget from Adorama @ the grand total of $114.95!!!

Thanks Alison A 50mm was what I was leaning towards. The shots posted in that 50mm war thread have me drooling to get one...LOL Question, would I be better off getting a new 1.8 or would it be worth it to look for a used 1.4?

At the end of the day, the decision is yours as to whether you want to spend the extra.
Why don't you go into a shop with your own camera and test the lenses. That's what I did when looking for a wide angle.

Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on the 1.4. If I had the money I would go out and buy 2 x 50mm 1.8 MKII's tomorrow.
That's how much I love it!

I have the 1.7 Pentax M version. I got that version because of the price really. I paid very little compared to the A 1.4 or 1.2 versions.

I coudn't be happier, I just have to get used to shooting full manual again.

Thanks for the input. I'll be ordering one hopefully with my next paycheck. First up on my list though is a new, more stable tripod. Want to be able to use the 300mm I just bought

the 85mm f/1.8 is a good choice too.
