I doubt the price will be over 1000 honestly, probably 999 tops, but I may be wrong.

Perhaps. I'll be waiting either way, to see how things turn out, perhaps it'll be within my price range. We'll see I guess.

When I googled it, I found that its price is supposed to be about $900, is this confirmable? (I'd assume this is kit)

Re: The Next Nikon DSLR- 20 day countdown!
Price as yet is not confirmable, but I would expect $999 absolute tops, probably 850-950ish, 800 as the *absolute* minimum. That would mesh with the cost of the D70/D70S level historically, with potential for a decrease in costs over time.

It would mean the standard outfit with camera body, battery, charger, warranty etc. and no lens. I would expect a body+18-70mm DX kit (or similar lens TBA?) to come in at price+$200ish.

    It's a D80 :)
    How cool is that!!!!

My first SLR was a N80, which was refered to as the "Baby F100". Somehow it seems appropriate that Nikon's landmark release (that is, 10 megapixels for under $1000) would be a D80. (Baby D200?) It's been a long time coming. I hope it lives up to everyone's expectations. Somehow, I think it will.

I will not be getting one, since I have a D200, but I'm sure it would make a great backup for a D200 shooter.

I'm glad to see Nikon taking a leading role in digital. It seemed that they were content with what they had, and only made changes to keep up with Canon. I'm thinking of the D100 for $2000. After the 10D came out for $1500, then Nikon dropped the price. And Nikon showed no interest in producing a cheaper digital SLR until the Digital Rebel came out. Which is what finally got Nikon going. The D70 was the first DSLR that impressed me with it's cost and performance.

I also remember that some folks were disappointed that the D2X didn't have a full size (24X36mm) sensor. But after using the D2X, some questioned the need for a full size sensor. And the D200 surpased everyones expectations with it's features - 95% of the D2X capabilities (including the D2X image processor) at 34% of the cost. And now the D80. It's a great time to be a Nikon shooter.

Maybe we should have a moment of silence for our misguided photography brothers and sisters who chose to shoot Canon thingy's...

it is quite interesting to see a SD card slot similar to the D50... i thought they would have put it out on a CompactFlash card. Maybe they might modify it after these few days?

Re: The Next Nikon DSLR- 20 day countdown!
Well, it seems to me like Nikon might be starting to introduce SD more into the lineup. This tells me that the next gen of cameras in the higher end (D200S refresher next year is likely, and the D3 series should roll out soon) will probably have dual media slots (CF/SD). This move is probably to encourage users of compact P&S cameras (mostly SD) to move up, and D50 users with SD to move up to the D80.

It is all very exciting, but doesn't all of this distract from learning how to take better pictures? It seems as if the Japanese have US photographers by the short hairs, lusting after the latest and newest, when much of that time and energy could be focused on technique. Of course, I am just as much techie as anyone, but the perpetual state of upgrade in the DSLR market these days has me wondering . ..

I think so. A lot of people seem more interested in how many pixels their cameras have and how much noise they have at a certain ISO than in what they can do to find, create, and compose better photos. One of the main goals of this site is to encourage people to learn and grow as photographers. So even though most of us do have a strong drive to get the lastest and greatest, we're trying to make sure that we keep our priorities straight. The real reason we buy cameras is to take pictures. And a new camera should help us take better pictures. However, we shouldn't be relying on equipment only to improve our photography. In the end, it's almost always practice and learning that make the real difference.

the camera has been leak-announced at Nikon's malaysia site. Details to follow, i'm preparing to post it in the news section.

Gist of it is the D80 is a 10MP camera slotting in below the D200 and above the D70s, offering compatible accessories (IR remote, wired remote) with the D70S (and for the IR, d50 and d70), same batteries as the D200 (EN-EL3E), a vertical grip option (MB-D80), 2.5" 230,000 pixel LCD, in camera retouching features, easy to use controls, a two-group commander function for the popup flash, 11-area AF system, 3fps continuous shooting, and a lightweight body.

Just today, I stumbled on the [I]Let's Go Digital[I] website, and I saw a bunch of D-200 "kits"--each with a lens of some sort and different prices. If you could get a D-200 (WITH warranty) and, say, an 18-50mm lens...for just shy of $1,200.00, would that sway you forever from a D-70???

I wouldn't trust that kind of price. Too good to be true means just that.

I'm pretty sure nobody has a full sensor, last time I checked they were very expensive.

Kodak has made two Full Frame Nikon cameras (14mp) but Nikon has chosen instead to go for the 1.5x sensor and lenses optimized for it. They have stated on several occasions they are developing FF or near-FF, but will not commit to releasing it unless it meets their exacting requirements.

Besides why would it matter...Nikon wouldn't debut it on the sub-$1000 consumer model.

I personally found myself pretty pleased with the specs, considering the price point.
