Nikon cameras with VR Image Stabilization

I have a tremor in my left hand and I am interested in the Nikon cameras with VR Image Stabilization. A lot of Nikon cameras list this feature: s8100, s6100, s4100. I am looking at the less expensive s4100, because I don't need billions of pixals.

Question 1 "is the VR Image Stabilization feature the same on all Nikon cameras?
question 2 "are there other less expensive brands with the same feature?

Re: Nikon cameras with VR Image Stabilization

Those all sound like p&s cameras...which I'm not too familiar with, but it should be the same idea. First things first, how bad is the tremor? I hate to say it, but while VR, IS, OS (or what ever form of stabilization the system has) is helpful for minor camera shake, like the kind you get at about 1/30 and down, it's not a miracle worker. If it's bad enough that it affects shots with a reasonably high shutter speed, VR won't help (medication then perhaps?).
To answer your questions though, 1: if the VR is in the camera/point and shoot, I would image there will be little difference between models. 2: many brands have some form of VR, but if you're looking at models that are comparable, the the prices will probably also be similar.
    mostly Nikon gear

Pending the severity of the tremor in your left hand, it is unlikely that any VR assist will be helpful whether it is in the camera or lens. I would suggest that you go to a camera store and give it a try, and then you can see the results right away.

Have you ever tried benzodiazepine? You could also try a cigarette, nicotine has some muscle relaxant properties as well, or try the Ecigarette idea if you are opposed to real tobacco Cigarettes and Benzodiazepine are a snipers best friend, keep that scope stable.

But YES! Other brands have them, there really isn't a "cheaper" brand than nikon, at least not in their point and shoots relative to their coolpix, their prices are nothing special, nothing egregious, just typical.. Anyway, IS, SSS, VC, etc - different brands label their stabilizer with different abbreviation. Canon's point and shoots are held to typically higher standards than Nikon's coolpix, and "IS" (image stabilizer) is a standard included on every model of theirs now. If you get one with manual modes, you may want to use "shutter priority" and set to 1/100th or 1/125th or so to mitigate the blur, which I think will do a better job than a stabilizer.

To set to shutter priority, pick "Tv" (or "S" on other brands), and adjust the control dial until the shutter speed says 1/100th on the LCD, then set your ISO to "Auto". At least, if you want automatic stuff, you could always manually expose all your images

Re: Nikon cameras with VR Image Stabilization

I don't know anything about the Nikon point-and-shoots. I actually have a Canon S95 which looks like a point-and-shoot but is actually an experts compact.

I plodded through the specs of camera you mention. No way to tell if the VR technology on the lower end models is the same as on the higher end ones but the specs seem to be identical.

I noticed that the Nikon models have a software vibration reduction mechanism on top of the optical VR system. This didn't sound familiar so I checked - and the Canon models don't seem to have it. So the systems are not all the same.
