Displaying images from my D300s directly onto a monitor

I'm wondering if there is a way to connect my D300s directly my computers monitor. I would like to be able to review my images more thoroughly on a larger screen than that on the back of the camera before I go through the trouble of uploading them to my computer.

I have an Apple monitor with DVI connectors. Is there some adapter that will allow me to plug into the A/V Out or HDMI on the side of the camera and output to my monitor?

You can, but you won't get full resolution of the image that way.
If you want to look at the detail, uploading to the computer is the only way.

I find uploading to the computer is no trouble.
    1) don't use the camera to do it
    2) use a fast (USB2) card reader
    3) copy each card to its own folder on the computer
    4) organise them

Then I go to the folder and load that into Lightroom for sorting/rating and export from RAW to JPG

I have folders for year, location/event, or general snaps, date, and memory card #

    e.g. by event
    2009\DTM\Hockenheim I\cf12 (compact flash card 12)
    2009\DTM\Hockenheim I\sd09 (SD card 9)

    or by date also
    2009\DTM\Brands Hatch\20090905\cf02
    2009\DTM\Brands Hatch\20090906\cf20

    or by camera for snapshots
    2009\E-P1\20090802\
    2009\E-P1\20091016\

Re: Displaying images from my D300s directly onto a monitor

I do a lot of macro photography and nature shots and most do not turn out right. Sometimes when a flower is swaying slightly in a gentle breeze you just need to take a lot of shots and sort the seed from the chaff. Fast moving insects are similarly difficult. I delete about 50% of the photos I take before uploading them to the camera, and then delete another 50% or so. It is a LOT faster to do this on the camera or TV screen than on the computer, and it saves transfer time and hard drive space as well.

Trouble is that my TV is an old CTR and the resolution isn't good enough to tell if images are sharp or not. For that I have to zoom in on the screen in the back of the camera, and that is a PIA. I figure my LCD monitor has to be a lot sharper than the CTR display, allowing me to thin the herd as much as possible before going onto the computer.

I am only just getting started using software to organize my photos. I am using Aperture and I have almost 5 years of photos to sort, organize (and delete!) over the coming winter. So your recommendations on organization are welcome.

    Read the manual

I don't know if the D300s is the same as the D300 in this respect, but here goes:

The D300 User Guide chapter "Viewing photographs on TV" section on "High definition devices" says that with a type A HDMI cable (not supplied) you can plug the camera into the HDMI device and then play back the images as normally - the image will go to the HDMI device rather than the LCD.

That doesn't necessarily mean it will work on your computer monitor. I guess that a HDMI device includes some sort of TV tuner to decode the incoming numeric data, whereas your computer monitor is receiving a non-numeric red-green-blue signal (can anybody confirm that?)

My filing system depends on the theme:

    - for Events I have a folder for each year then a subfolder for each event. Each event is anchored in time and I don't mix the same event year after year
    - for Travels I have a folder for each continent, a subfolder for each country then region then place. Time is not so important and I prefer to have a cumulative view of the place
    - for People I have a folder for where I met the person (Family, Work, Holidays..) then a folder for each person
    - for Holidays I have a folder for each trip, which is an informal narrative of what happened. Large chunks get stored as Events, Travels and People so Holidays tends to include hotel interiors, friends looking bored in airport lounges, etc.

Not buying any more gear this year. I hope

sounds like it's time to swap your monitor for a small flat screen tv so you have the hdmi inputs.
