D700 - Is that it?

I was anxiously awaiting the announcement of a replacement for my D70 that had 12MP,
3" LCD and Live view BUT at a price point of around $1200. Thought for sure a D90 was coming for us type users (frugal). I really don't need the level of the new D700 and certainly cannot afford the price point.

Has anyone heard of a lower priced less sophisticated model coming this fall?

What's wrong with the D80? It's a sweet camera, and the 2mp difference is like nothing.

The D80 is about due for updating. There are lots of rumors about a possible D90 coming, and judging by past upgrades, it is likely to have the D300 sensor in it, like the D80 had the D200 sensor. Photokina is a big photographic trade show that takes place near the end of September every year. I expect some announcements either at the show or before the show, but there's no way to tell if the D90 rumors or true until then. Nikon engineers may have been too busy with the D3x. I'm expecting great things from both Nikon and Canon.

The D700 is not an upgrade to the D70/80 line at all. the D700 is a light professional full frame body. The D80 replacement will be a DX body and should be announced in the next 2 months or so.

The firmly-niched Consumer DSLRs from Nikon are almost universally announced right around the main tradeshows, usually PMA and Photokina. Semi-pro and pro bodies will sometimes fall around the same time but sometimes will be announced around a less prominent show or on their own.

I just went on holiday with my D70 - left the D200 & D300 at home, too heavy, too expensive. The major improvements of the D300 over the D70 in my opinion:

- viewfinder. You can really see what's going on
- 51 zone focussing system. It took a while to get used to but now I like it
- better JPG's. A huge improvement in image treatment
- Active D-lighting. I have to retouch my D70 RAW files when I could have told the D300 to do it
- Dust removal. First step on my D70 images this morning was to do a dust-off correction in NX because I have a speck of dust in the sky

Nobody knows what will be in the D90 but it could contain some or all of these features.

Fall @ photokina you should hear about the D90. Ask yourself if the new sensor is worth it for you. If not, the D80 or D200 should suffice. 2MP isn't really much, the big difference is the high iso performance (which is great on the D300). I made the decision for the D200 (which I could get for really cheap) since I never shoot above 800 anyways.
