    Nikon D40 question

    Hello,
I just purchased a used Nikon D40, missing is the usb cable, manual, picture project cd and the quick start guide. What do I need to purchase to download pictures and edit them? Is the picture project guide cd a program that can edit pictures? I have a Canon G7 and the program cd that came with it was ZoomBrowser. Can I transfer pictures from the Nikon on to this program or do I need another program. Will I need the usb cable? Sorry for all the questions since I do not know what all originally came with the camera.

    Thank You,
    Tim

    Re: Nikon D40 question

    Hello Tim,
Did you handle that camera with welder's gloves? JK.

Anyway, you don't need a USB cable if you have a card reader that will hook up to your computer. You can just eject the card and put it into the card reader to move photos from the camera to the computer.
You don't need any special software to transfer pictures from the card to your computer. The computer will see the card as just another drive and you can drag and drop the pics into any folder you like.
I would think that if you shoot in JPG format you can use your Canon software to edit the pics. Picture Project is a good program but if you have Window's Vista, PP is not very stable in Vista. There is a free, Photoshop-like program, called GIMP that can be downloaded from the net that is a very good editor.
I recently purchased Nikon Capture NX2 for $99 and am very happy with it. It handles jpg, tiff and Nikon's RAW format NEF. If you decide to shoot in RAW I don't know if GIMP will handle that.
I would strongly encouorage you to get a manual, however. Or if you can't find a manual, pick up this book: Nikon D40/D40x Digital Field Guide by David D. Busch.
Also, www.kenrockwell,com is a great D40 resource and he has a downloable/printable pdf file for the D40 that is very helpful.

I'll tell you that it's handy to have the USB cable, so I'd encourage you to get one eventually. But it's not necessary as long as you have some kind of card reader.
