Re: check out the new nikon p90

I'm not a big fan of the entire category of "bridge cameras". To me, either get an SLR with interchangeable lenses, or get a small camera that you can stick in a pocket and carry around with you all the time.

A camera like this P90 has a lens that, in order to get such a huge zoom range, is going to have a small maximum aperture, and a wide angle that is neither wide enough, nor free enough from distortion for serious wide angle work.

And bridge cameras have much smaller sensors, which provide much less low-light sensitivity than an SLR, and much slower shutter latency than an SLR, which precludes doing any serious sports or wildlife shooting, despite the extremely long telephoto reach of the lens.

These things are for people who don't know much about SLRs, and are afraid of the complexity of SLRs, but they do not offer anywhere NEAR the capability of SLRs, they are only designed to make neophyte buyers THINK that they do. That type of customer is surely better off buying a much smaller camera with a 4-1 or 10-1 zoom at the absolute max, for much less money, that will be easier to use, and easier to carry around with them.

There are other camera that can do that, it's a neat trick.
Start filling the buffer when the shutter button is pressed half way, but don't write to the card until it's pressed all the way.

I can't remember for sure, but I think Casio was the first company to offer this feature. It's been around two or three years now.

    oh, thats news to me.

still doesn't solve shutter lag problem if you have to have shutter half way first... anyone know how good it works?

Bridge cameras, Prosumer, SLR-like, whatever you want to call them, I think they have a place in the gear bag. Not as large & heavy (conspicuous) as SLRs, but can offer more creative options than many P&S cams.

That being said, I suspect 6400 ISO is overkill for this type of camera
