Battery Grip

Just curious if anyone has bought or used one of these?

I bought one long ago for my D80. DON'T BUY ONE! The off brand ones are really flimsy, the camera sometimes doesn't turn on because the batteries shift, and the tripod mounts are held on with adhesive (read: YIKES!). Get a nikon brand battery grip.

Based on those images, even if I hadn't read this thread I wouldn't even think of touching them. They look flimsy even in the photos posted.

Buy genuine Nikon.

Adorama offers a pretty good one. Nikon only makes battery grips for D80>. Adorama makes a good grip though http://www.adorama.com/INKMBD40A.html.

FYI- You can grab a NEW D80 for a little over $100 more and you'll get the ability to use non AF-S lenses, higher flash sync, better metering (although you'll need to dial in stuff on most shots until the D200 or D300 range) a heavier duty body, a BRIGHT viewfinder (prism not mirror) which alone is worth the extra $100. I would go for the D80 and buy the official Nikon grip if you need it (honestly if you just carry an extra battery in your pocket it's a lot lighter and better than adding heft to your camera directly).

Nikon only makes battery grips for the D80 and higher.
I would say avoid these cheap third party grips though, they are of poor quality and design.

A few years ago, I purchased a Hoodman battery grip for a D70, and it still works great. Never had a problem, but I will say after about a year, I purchased a D200 and the D70 went into a drawer, and was only used around the house for quick photos of cars/trucks/dog, etc.
Can't speak for the brand in the ebay ad.

Well I have a D40 and it looks like the only way I can get the grip is from a Ebay vender. I am going to pass and just use the camera the way it is. Thanks for the help all.

I actually like my D60 a lot, its perfect for what I do I will invest in a more 'professional' camera at some point, but for now my D60 does everything I want and much more

I do have a spare battery that I keep in the bag with it, and I haven't run into battery issues yet anyway, but it would be nice to know about if I decide I want the grip, thanks! :thumbsup:
