Shutter Release Delay With Flash

When I shoot my D70 with my Metz 54 AF-1N flash attached, I get a delay when I push the shutter release. It's not "major," but it causes me to occasionally "miss the moment" if you know what I mean. My questions:

Is it the flash?
Is it the camera?
Any way to correct the problem?

I don't have the Metz, I have the SB800. This sounds like a problem I have occasionally with flash where the camera takes a while to do the autofocus in low light. You can see the red focus-assist light working. It's not a flash problem.
