Well he's entitled to his opinion but I only have one of these lenses (the 70-300) and even that I hardly ever use. As for a 105mm Macro or an 800mm - I have no use for either of these.

I think that after a while you get to know what are your preferred subjects and what is the best choice. My list for FF would be:

- 24-120 VR. Image quality is not so hot but it fits 90% of my needs
- 70-200 f4 VR. Same range as the 70-200 F2.8 but much more usable because smaller
- 50mm f1.8. I have the f1.4 but I wish I'd stuck to the f1.8
- 17-35 f2.8 for wide-angle
- 85mm f1.8 for portaits

For DX it's much simpler

- 16-80 f2.8-f4 for difficult light
- 18-140 f3.5-5.6 as general-purpose walkabout in good light
- 70-300 VR for tele
