Wood Stork on White

Always tough when the weather is bad (or at least the light is bad), but you have an endangered species in your sights. The only option, of course, is to go for it. Shooting white birds against a white background is always an exposure challenge, but very do-able if you know how to handle it. First, always meter off the bird, and not the background! You'll end up with underexposed areas on the bird if you don't. Watch for "flashies" when you're making your adjustments, and let the histogram be your guide (as always). These were both pushed to one and a third EV (4/3 EV), and the second one also had a fill flash set at -1 EV (on the flash) to compensate for a slightly bad light angle and shadows.

Thanks! I'll keep working these. You all know me....after the perfect pose and light. I can't wait to catch one of these in a calm pool of water at sunrise (with that rich, golden light I love so much!). You'll see it when I do!
