    Temporary Salvation

The other night I was out on the deck lighting the grill when my dog snatched this fledgling robin out of the air. I got the dog to let it go right away while the mother was watching. I picked up the bird and took it to the other side of the house and set it in the grass, next to some bushes. I made sure the watchful mother could see where I left her baby, then grabbed my camera for a couple quick shots. After taking care of a few things around the house, I went back to check on it, and it was gone. I assumed it had hopped down the hill and into the bushes to safety.

Later that evening, my girlfriend told me that my nephew had killed a baby bird. He was running through the yard, and tripped, and fell on the bird. I never saw it, but I'm guessing it's the same bird I saved from the dog earlier.

"I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters' paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view."
