Snake ID

[Lava Lamp]

I actually know what this is, but I thought it might be fun to see if anyone can make an ID fromt the photo. I met him/her mowing the lawn this morning. I didn't measure, but I'd say he/she was about 8" long, give or take a little and about as thick s a pencil.

This little fella reminds me of a baby coachwhip, but they tend to have a different belly color..

i'd say its a red bellied snake. really cool photo of them, i had one to manipulate and couldn't get very realistic shots of the head and the under tail like you did.

Without research.... ringnecked snake We have a subspecies here and I know them well.

that was my first thoguh to, but you can't see a ring around its neck, still might be one though. esp the belly scales now that i look at them again.

well it looks similiar to a swamp snake, but the belly color is off. I can see the ring

Ringnecks snakes(southern SP. here) have yellow speckled bellies with red toward the tail end .

the belly doesn look a bit like a red bellied snake, i don't have my photographs of them anywhere close (they are back in pittsburgh, i'm in utah for the summer) or i'd show them to :-)

The ring seals the deal, doesn't it? The belly was a bright orange, as was the neck band. I've only seen a red neck band before.

yeah the back patterns are totally different between the 2, that is def a reing neck. but just looking at the belly it can be easily confused, although a red bellys i've seen are much redder :-)
