    Great images BB, thanks for sharing. For the uninitiated (that includes me) what type of snake is this and how close were you to him. The reason I ask, is tha there in the Great White NOrth, we don't often encounter snakes and when we do they don't look like this one...so I am just curious. Thanks.

    Western Guy that snake is a bull snake. It ranges all the way from Mexico into Canada. It's a large non-venomous snake that eats rabbits, prairie dogs, mice, birds etc. It's often mistaken for a rattlesnake by some folks. I think its one of the neatest looking snakes around.

    BB, thanks for the information - bull snake, yes, but I think I can see why some might initially mistake it for a rattler - it seems to have a vague, very vague mind you, resemblance to a Western Diamondback Rattler, at least from the pictures I have seen.
