    Snake Book?

    Can anyone recommend a snake ID book? Maybe the herp equivalent of Sibley?

    i'm not sure of a good snake book, i use a amphibians and reptiles one, that isn't very good. for instance the great basin and faded midget are both clumped under the western rattlesnake, along with all the other subspecies of it, but they one have a pic of 1 or 2 of them.


    my other herpetology books arn't for iding, just info about everythign from movment, to anatomy etc

    hi.

    The best field guides to snakes are the peterson's guides. They use illustrations rather than photographs (important when making ID guides) and cover everything that we can find in the US.

    However, the taxonomy changes so much that some of the latin is out of date. Also, I am not aware of ANY field guide that breaks down subspecies. I almost always rely on http://cnah.org/nameslist.asp?id=6 for subspecific identification.
