"Magpie"

Hi there. I managed to get a couple of shots yesterday of some magpies that sometimes come to our garden. I took this shot using the canon 18-55mm kit lens, from a distance of about 100cm.
I was sat in a cardboard box covered with snow for 2½ hours before getting this shot.
(I did notice that this magpie had an injured foot)

Bevb, these birds are so timid it's unbelievable. I was very happy to be able to capture this one from this sort of distance, and glad that I managed to get the snow to look ok too.

This is very nice! Some of the blacks are a bit blocked up , but this is a VERY hard subject to expose! It honestly doesn't get much better than that!

One of my favorite frans lanting images was done with an 18mm lens on film I do believe. wide(below 100mm) angle wildlife images are great!

Please can you explain what you mean by "Some of the blacks are a bit blocked up", and give me some tips on how to correct this next time. I'm pretty new to photography, specially with the dslr. I'm trying to use manual settings most of the time so any tips that you could give me would be great.

Well blocked up blacks are areas with no detail , which is the same as BLOWN highlights. You truely CAN'T get a single exposure of that bird with detail in the blacks and whites at the same time due to the narrower latitude in DSLR files(similiar to slides)!
