Looong Time Since I Shot One of These

Like almost 20 years, I think. This little one came out while we were putting in a new mailbox. Sorry for posting so many pixs. Kind of exciting shooting one though.

My 12 year old son was the hand model. What species is it anyway?

Is that full grown? Did you do this with the tubes? The detail in these are great.

Re: Looong Time Since I Shot One of These

I think it must be a juvenile. It was only about a foot long nose to tail.

Yeah, tubes again. Although I have used tubes with my 24-70mm, just about everything I shoot (macro-wise) is on my 70-200mm.

Weird, a few of these images look desaturated. I thought that about some others I posted here in the past. Anyone have that issue? It could also be that it was late last night, I was really tired, and I had some wine... :blush2:

    I stumped the "snakeman"?!

I guess I should have tried to ID it BEFORE letting my son handle it

Anyway, I'm told there is a BIG one in our rear lot around some trees. I'll keep my eye out for it and try to get a shot of that one to post here.

I believe I am the resident snakeman....

Looks like a juvi Bullsnake to me.

Bullsnake, Pituophis catenifer. Quite common in your neck of the woods, and also quite variable in markings and coloration.

I was debating that, but it has far less pattern than those I have seen.

I have seen captives that are all but patternless.

Well a bull snake is a gopher snake out west and in the east some call them pine snakes right? I haven't seen that little markings on a gopher/bull ever, but everything about that snake(beside the lack of dense pattern) says Gopher/bull to me !

    Thanks, snakemen

Bullsnake sounds kinda bad. I think I will tell my family it was a Pine Snake instead

I will look for that BIG one and hope to capture it on film ("capture it on an image sensor" doesn't have the nice ring to it, does it).

It's not a true pinesnake, but people call them that at times still... It's a BULLSNAKE. At one time the pine, gopher and bullsnake were grouped as one species, but they are actually 3 seperate species from different areas.

sorry guys, not a bullsnake. heres some pictures.

    hey.

definately not a bullsnake, It is for sure a brownsnake or a redbelly snake. If the belly is buff it is a brownsnake, Storeria dekayi ssp. If the belly is red it is a redbelly snake, Storeria occipitomaculata ssp. It is an adult. Both species are common in the midwest and are virtually identical except for the belly color. dorsal color is highly variable, from shades of brown to flat black and often with spots or broken lines down the back. here is a picture.

    a sub-adult brownsnake,.total length about 8 inches.
