That is interesting. I've never seen one stripped like that.

Me either Loupey, but they were like that all over the tree! Any ideas what would do that?

I've never seen a pine cone stripped like that either. Could a squirrel have done it, only guessing.

Was definitely a pine tree. A lot of the pine trees around here have been turning brown and dropping their needles. It has been a VERY dry season for us.

A giant pencil sharpener. Should be easy to find - look for a giant kid holding it.

That cone "root" looks like a prehistoric coniferous tree. Weird. All we need now is a dragonfly with a 3' wingspan.

I hope the pencil sharpener is pink.

Interesting picture Amber. You must have different pine trees than we do because the ones around here do not turn brown and drop their needles. We have a coniferous tree that does that in a few mountain valleys to the west. We call them larch. I would tend to agree that this was probably done by a squirrel, although the branches look a little flimsy to support a squirrel Could support a chipmunk though. Do you have any of those in your part of the world?

Well.. I have not seen any chipmunks out here.. so I cant say for sure. I has asked my hubby because I really didn't look at the actual tree myself and he said he was sure it was a pine tree.. so thats what I posted lol. I just saw that branch and thought it was interesting, my 5 and 2 yr old were getting a little impatient with Mommy and her Camera! I dont know when we'll be heading back over to the zoo, but when we do I will take another look/picture.

Amber, regardless of the tree or what did this, it will keep people guessing for a long time. Good shot.

If you get back to the zoo, it would be nice to see a picture of the entire tree and maybe a few more of these stripped cones. Other question for everyone -- is it possible that some kind of a bird could do this???
