Took the 40D out to the Phoenix Zoo today, got some decent enough I thought I would share here. Hope you like.




















Somewhere between my computer, photobucket and posting here I lose all the sharpness in my photos and I'm not sure how to fix it.

Not sure how photobucket handles images. Perhaps others can chime in on that.

But I like #2 in the series the best.

maplestreet, these look okay to me (I like the lions), given what you have to go through to get them on photobucket and then posted here. I am assuming that you shoot in raw, and that you do some sharpening along the way in your work flow - presumably just before you begin the upload/posting process . The problem that we all have, is that when we are working with the original raw image on our computer, in my case in Lightroom, but I don't think it really matters could be CS5 or Elements or any other "editing" program, everything looks nice and sharp until you have to downsize the image, convert it to jpeg, post it to photobucket, or wherever you post it, and then upload it to this forum. In my opinion, and experience, you will always lose a little bit of sharpness in this process, sometimes more than others, depending on the size of the original image. I wouldn't think that you lose all the sharpness, because these still retain a reasonable amount of the detail that I assume was in the original and, for web postings, they look pretty good to me. I don't think that you can ever hope to achieve the sharpness that you see in your own environment in the "posting" environment. In my experience, the simple conversion to jpegs and the "downsizing" for the web results in a loss of some of the sharpness and this is unavoidable. (My opinion and experience)

I would be interested in others experience and thoughts on the matter.

Some hosting sites will compress or sharpen your photos without your permission. I remember trying one of the larger sites (can't remember which) and every photo I uploaded had all of the sharpness compressed out of it. Flickr sharpens (OVERSHARPENS) like crazy on all versions of your photo except "original" size, to the point of sharpening artifacts and highlight clipping.

To get best results, sharpen as your last step at full resolution, resize, sharpen again, upload, double check that your uploaded file is not less-sharp than the file you uploaded. That way you have eliminated user error and web-based sharpness changes.
