Finally got some decent weather to shoot the 40D in.

Here are a few images from today down at Corkscrew Swamp (except the last was taken right out my front door on Christmas Eve). Nothing special, just wanted to do some more work with it an see how it did under decent conditions. Overall, I like it a lot. The 1DsMII has nothing to worry about with regards to being replaced, but I am far happier with it than I was with the XTi. Not that the XTi is a bad camera (I've taken some excellent images with it), it's just that this one is quite a bit better. I've also reached the conclusion that the 1.6 CF on it is actually too much in many cases. I see it primarily being mounted to my 70-200 f/2.8L zoom lens, while the 1DsMII stays mounted primarily to the 600L. Anyway, Enjoy:

Here's a Black Crown Night Heron asleep in a tree. This is a full-frame image.

Not sure on this one. I think it's an immature Yellow Bellied Sapsucker. I have several shots of it (some full frame, some not). He was actually too close for the 40D on the 600.

Here's a (nearly) full moon I shot on Christmas Eve. I used the 1.4x and -2EV on this one.

Nice shooting, Canon_Bob. I think you, like me, are finding that the 40D once customized is a really nice camera.

This info is encouranging especially for me as I expect to use the 40D primarily with the 500mm f/4L (with and without the 2x TC) while the 30D will remain with the 300mm f/4L (with and without tubes).

I definitely think it's a good camera. A big step up from the XTi for sure. I also shot a few macro images with it (I'm no Loupey in this area, folks, but I try )

I kinda like the lighting angle on these:

Cool shots. I just can't imagine finding insects this time of the year.

LOL - I can relate Mike. I'm actually a Minnesota native. Grew up near Princeton and Willmar (Although originally from the Twin Cities area - Coon Rapids). I have my snow shovel painted gold and hanging on the wall near my pool . You can have that snow! Been there....Done that!!

    Canon Bob,

I just purchased the 40D day before yesterday, going out on a night shoot tomorrow. Thanks for posting these great shots. I too am stepping up from the XTi and just shooting around the back yard know this is a significant step up. As for the snow: that is why I am in San Diego. I lived in Rosemount, Mn. for many years and hope to never see another snow flake as long as I live.
