Funny thing is, I thought it looked like a kingfisher, just bigger. Now I know that we have at least two variety of kingfishers in my neck of the woods. Thanks for verifing the ID my friend!

You have one variety the ringed and green kingfishers live in texas and only 3 are in the continental US. You thought it was bigger due to getting closer I bet and the females do not have the reddish band in the belly.
