I saw this guy on the shore first thing in the morning.Luckily the fish was too heavy for him to fly very far. That gave me a chance to follow him down the shoreline(in my boxers!!).:D Thanks for looking:D

This is an amazing shot. If I’d been there though it would of been a tough decision to shoot the bird or you chasing it in your boxers. Definitely a keeper. Thanks for sharing this picture and story.

Loupey - What did you do to this shot? My guess is a curves adjustment and a saturation adjustment .. not to mention the crop. Anything else?

Yeah Loupey, what did you do? Details, details!! I'm wondering what it was that you saw on the original that needed fixing? I have such a hard time figuring out what to do in PP besides the obvious.I think that I have turned some wallhangers into just average shots.:mad2: Yours looks so much better than mine. It seems to really pop.

BB, I recognized that you had a winner right away by the pose and the sharpness (as immediately evident in the eye and beak). I also knew that there was minimal PP in the original as this is how most of my images look straight out of the camera. Of course my images don't ever have a wild BALD EAGLE like that in it! :p

Recall that I set my camera settings all to "null" (sharpness, contrast, ...) specifically so that I adjust them in PP. So flat images are always going to result before PP. That's normal.

What I did here is all minor stuff. Just a lot of little steps. Mind you, I'm far from a Photoshop expert so a lot of what I do is probably inefficient but the steps involved always work for me. I don't recall exactly the settings I used here but they involve the following basic 3 steps:

1) adjust levels - typically bringing up the mid-tones to add detail in the shadows while bringing down the low-tones to add richness and contrast to the low end
2) adjust colors - typically removing the color cast (usually too much cyan and blue)
3) adjust curves - typically bringing up the mid-tones (again) but also bringing down the highlights so as not to overbrighten the high end

That's it in a nutshell. I did the above 3 steps about 3 times (remember, small steps). Ironically, the biggest adjustment was to UNsaturate (by about 30%) as the levels adjustment by itself will add too much saturation.

Final step, sharpen ever so slightly with USM. Again, all small stuff. But the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts.

No need for masks, layers, ... IMO. I was using Photoshop 5.0 until just last year. I don't like to use the highlights/shadows adjustment anymore as it tends to look unnatural and makes the images appear "over the top".


I see a lot of GOOD images on this forum (not just N/W) which would be GREAT images with some basic PP work. I consider basic, but knowledgeable PP skills to be more important than top-notch glass. That's why I often post examples of images taken with kit lenses here.

Nice job there !!!!!! The DOF is a bit shallow and the shutter speed was slow, but I assure you I wouldn't have done better myself!
