    Mixed bag of birds

Bad weather and no sun today (2/22/07).

A male downy w/p (vertical crop).

    Female downy w/p (vertical crop).

Sorry about the washed out sky. This is just to show the difference in size between a hairy w/p (male upper left) and a downy w/p (female lower right). They were about a foot apart on the tree.

Male oldsquaw from yesterday (pretty heavy crop).

Female oldsquaw from yesterday (pretty heavy crop).

Okay, please do not scroll down if you will be upset by seeing an animal skeleton. I found what I assume to be a hawk skeleton hanging just like it is in the images below… it’s part of nature (I was saddened to see it).

Lovely shots Copy. I love number five running along the water. As for the hawk skeleton, It's just natures way.

Thank you Cassie, they are incredible birds to watch. They would float down the river until they reached where the ice began, and then fly back up river and do it again.

Here's a male pileated from yesterday. I couldn't get very close before I scared him away, I tried getting a better view. I heard one in the same woods today, and another off in the distance... they're one of the coolest sounding birds around.

Love that running takeoff! Excellent composition.

As for the skeleton - that is unusual that the carcass didn't fall apart and blow down. Perhaps you've been voodooed

Skeleton - reminds me of The Blair Witch Project . . . You might want to stay away from that area . . .

Seriously - I wonder what got it? And how odd to find it in the tree like that. Our local raptor center would have been very interested had it been found around here.

I think it may have died a little higher in the tree and then fell. I hope it wasn't something like the bird flu or West Nile.
