Juvenile Goldfinch & Greenfinch
After along time trying to temp goldfinchs into the garden with their favourite seed feeds, i was thrilled to have a juvenile goldfinch come to feed with 2 adults that have now been coming since spring, (and now on a daily basis), and also the greenfinch is making a regular appearance.
Glad to be back since having no internet service for nearly a week!! I was starting to have withdrawal symptoms!
Re: Juvenile Goldfinch & Greenfinch
Welcome back! I've been trying to get this good of finch shots for a month or so intermittently. I do not have feeders at home, so have been trying to get shots from blinds at the local nature conservancy area. They have dozens of finchs around, but even at the feeding areas they are extremely shy.
You had good light too! I particularly like the landing shots.

Nice images as usually Bev.

Love the way you are able to got those outstretched wings with such definition and detail. Welcome back.
Re: Juvenile Goldfinch & Greenfinch
nice shots bev. but what else is new:D :D :D :D
to get finches to come to your yard in droves use thistle seed or nigera(sp?) seed. they look the same and are cheap. feeder should be a finch with small slots to keep other birds out.
you can also use what is called a sock and comes prepacked already for finches. trouble is they will blast through that in a day or 2:eek:
this is a slow day at one of my finch feeders and i have 2. buy my seed in 20lb bags as it is only good for about 10 days:D
doesn't matter if you haven't seen a finch at your palce before. they will find it. i have both greenback and american that fight for a place in line. it can be empty for 3 days and within 5 minutes of filling it up it will look like this:D

Thanks OT, drg,Paulnj, your comments and advice are always welcome.
Thanks terryger for your tips, i do use niger seed as well as sunflower hearts which the goldfinch love! but this eason i have only been able to temp 3 regular goldfinch and recently the juvenile, so to have droves coming to my feeders would be a dream, but this time last year i didnt have these so i am very pleased, who knows next season may bring the wonderful sight you have on your feeder.
