Hawk trying to get squirrel out of hole
Unfortunately I just botched the hell out of the exposure on most of these.

I saw the squirrel run in, so he was in there, and the hawk knew it but couldn't get him out.

Round one went to the squirrel. But the hawk was perched in the next tree over, preening and waiting. It was too cold to stick around for round 2.

Wow! Truly a rare sequence. I've never seen a hawk with that much tenacity (or that desperate) to go after its prey like that.

I too love those leg-in-the-hole shots. Can you just imagine the scene if that hawk managed to pull that squirrel out of there?! You were in the right place/time.

Absolutely amazing series of pictures. That hawk certainly didn't want to give up either. This must have been lots of fun to photograph and to watch also. That little squirrel must have been petrified!

Incredible series of photos! I have been an outdoorsman all my life and never witnessed a hawk do that. Had one steal a trout off my fishing line once, but never try to grab a squirrel out of a knot hole like that. Thanks for sharing these.
